Everyone in your robotics club WhatsApp group has an opinion on which competition to enter first, and almost none of them agree. This is Part 1 of a two-part guide to every major robotics competition Indian students can enter, sorted by skill level, format, and cost, starting with everything that happens inside India: Techfest, DD Robocon, e-Yantra, the school-age pipeline, and a few homegrown competitions most students never hear about until it's almost too late.
ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS

Somebody in your second week of college mentions Robocon like you're supposed to know what it is. Someone else says they're doing e-Yantra this year. A senior tells you Techfest Robowars is where the real robotics happens. You nod, write the names down, and still have no idea which one actually fits you.
That confusion is normal. It's not because these competitions are secretive. It's because nobody's written down, in one place, what each one actually asks of you: how much experience you need, how long the build takes, what it costs, and what you walk away with.
This is that document. Part 1 covers everything that happens inside India, from the three names everyone drops (Techfest, DD Robocon, e-Yantra) to the school-age pipeline, the campus fest circuit, combat robotics, and a couple of homegrown competitions most students never hear about until their third year. The big three, properly explained
These are the three names you'll hear most, and they're genuinely different competitions solving different problems. Confusing them is the single biggest reason first-timers pick the wrong starting point.
Techfest, IIT Bombay
Techfest is Asia's largest student-run science and technology festival, and robotics isn't one event inside it. It's an entire ecosystem. Meshmerize is the autonomous line-follower competition. Cozmoclench tests robotic grippers on manipulation tasks. Roborace and the International Micromouse Challenge test navigation and maze-solving. International Robowars, the flagship, puts combat robots into a sealed arena in front of a live crowd. Blixathon exists specifically for junior-level builders who are just getting started.
That range is exactly why Techfest confuses first-timers. It's simultaneously beginner-friendly (Blixathon) and internationally elite (Robowars, where past champions have included teams from well beyond India). Pick the specific event that matches you. Don't decide to "do Techfest" as a vague goal and figure out the rest later.

DD Robocon, India's ABU Robocon selection
DD Robocon is a different animal. It's India's national selection process for ABU Robocon, an international college robotics contest run by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. Every member country, India included, runs its own selection to pick the team that represents it, and in India that selection is organized through Doordarshan and Prasar Bharati, with the host institute rotating each year. The 2026 edition is being run by IIT Delhi in partnership with STPI.
The scale has grown a lot since it started. The first India contest ran in 2002 at IIT Kanpur with four teams from three colleges. By 2012 that had grown to 66 teams. By 2018, held at Pune's Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, it was 107 teams. The 2024 edition, held at Delhi's Thyagaraj Stadium, drew more than 750 students from over 45 colleges and institutions, and the Institute of Technology at Nirma University took the win. Finals have traditionally landed on the first Saturday of March, though the host institute changes yearly, so check the current calendar rather than assuming.
Every year gets a new theme announced by the international host, and every team builds two robots to complete themed tasks against the clock: one manual or semi-autonomous, one fully autonomous. The 2026 international theme, hosted in Hong Kong, is Kung Fu Quest, where teams assemble weapons, retrieve scrolls, and race to complete a tic-tac-toe pattern before the other team.
This is not a first competition. It assumes an established club, machine-shop access, and months of dedicated mechanical design (pneumatics, linkages, drivetrains), not just sensor tuning. Past editions have been quoted at registration costs well into six figures once fabrication is added, so treat this as something your institution backs, not something you fund out of your own pocket.

e-Yantra Robotics Competition (eYRC)
If Robocon is the advanced end, e-Yantra is the honest beginner entry point, and it's run by IIT Bombay too, funded by the Ministry of Education. e-Yantra doesn't just test what you already know. It teaches you as you go, which the organizers describe as learn while competing. That's a real structural difference, not marketing language. The competition is built around training tasks, not just judged rounds.
The format runs 7 to 8 months, split into two stages. Stage 1 is simulation and software based: three tasks that teach the season's core skills before you touch hardware. Stage 2 moves to hardware, with kits either shipped to your team or accessed remotely depending on the year's theme. Top-performing teams get flown to IIT Bombay for the finale.
Because it's this structured, e-Yantra is genuinely open to any full-time student. Engineering, science, polytechnic, even arts colleges qualify, in teams of 2 to 4 from the same institution.

The school-age track: WRO, VEX, and FLL
If you're not in college yet, none of the big three quite fit, and that's fine. There's an entire parallel track built for school students, and one part of it has grown faster than most people realize.
World Robot Olympiad (WRO) India is the largest and most established of these, run by the India STEM Foundation since 2006. It splits by age (Elementary 8 to 12, Junior 11 to 15, Senior 14 to 19, with a Future Engineers category running up to 22) and by competition style. RoboMission is challenge-based autonomous missions on a randomized field. Future Innovators is project-based, presented to judges. RoboSports pits two teams' robots against each other in a game format. Future Engineers focuses on autonomous vehicle-style engineering. Teams of 2 to 3 students work with an adult coach, moving through regional and national championships toward a global final.
VEX Robotics has quietly built a real pathway into India too, and faster than WRO did. It holds the Guinness World Record for largest robotics competition on the planet, split into VEX IQ (elementary and middle school) and VEX V5 (middle and high school, the bigger of the two). In India, local partners now run the entire national season end to end: one recent cycle saw more than 50 teams compete in their first-ever events, more than 40 advance to the National Championship, and six Indian teams earn a spot at the VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, going up against some of the world's most established STEM programs.
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) runs in India through franchise partners rather than one unified national body, covering roughly ages 6 to 16 depending on division. It's worth knowing about, but expect the local experience to vary more by which center or school runs it, since there's no single governing body the way WRO India or VEX India's national season now have.

For school students eyeing college-level robotics early: FIRST Tech Challenge India
There's one more school-age option worth knowing separately, because it's the most direct on-ramp to the difficulty of college robotics: FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) India. It's open to grades 7 to 12 in teams of 3 to 15, built around an official FTC kit of parts, with a new themed challenge released every September. Teams compete through regional events toward an India Championship, and the strongest can advance to the global FIRST Championship. If you're in school but already comfortable soldering and want a taste of what a real robotics club feels like before college, this is where to look.
The campus tech-fest robotics circuit
Beyond the big three, almost every major engineering college in India runs its own robotics events as part of its annual tech fest. These are lower-stakes than Techfest or Robocon, which makes them the honest best place to test a robot you've just finished building before you take it somewhere bigger.

Your own campus circuit matters more than this table can capture. Colleges like VIT Vellore, SRM, and Amrita run their own well-attended line-follower and robotics events too, often exactly the kind of low-pressure first race where you find out whether your PID tuning actually holds up outside your hostel room. If your college doesn't have one yet, this circuit is also the easiest one to start locally and grow into.
One more track worth a mention if you'd rather build for a real-world problem than a race track: Smart India Hackathon runs a Hardware Edition alongside its software track, open nationally. It's a genuinely different kind of challenge: less about speed on a line, more about solving a stated problem with working hardware.
Combat robotics: Robowars, if navigation isn't your thing
Everything above is about a robot completing a task on its own. Robowars is the exception: two robots, one arena, direct combat, and it shows up at nearly every major fest. Techfest, Techkriti, Shaastra, and Kshitij all run their own editions.
The skills here are genuinely different from line-following or maze-solving. You're building for durability and controlled aggression, not sensor precision: armor, drivetrain torque, and weapon systems instead of PID loops. If that sounds more interesting than autonomous navigation, treat it as a separate track rather than a variation on the same build.

Team sizes for Robowars events are typically capped around 5 to 6 members, and every fest publishes its own safety-inspection rules before robots are cleared to compete. Always check the specific event's rulebook before you start fabricating.
Technoxian: India's own international-facing championship
There's one more India-hosted option that doesn't fit neatly into "college fest" or "school program": Technoxian. Started in 2014 by Rajkumar Sharma and run by the All India Council for Robotics and Automation, it bills itself as the world's biggest robotics championship series. For years, the entire event, all the way through the international final, was held in India, with Indira Gandhi Arena in Delhi hosting several editions.
That changes for the 2026 season, its 10th edition. Zonal rounds run across Indian cities from April to May, a national round happens in India in July, but the Final Selection round and the world final itself move to the UAE. Worth knowing if you assumed the whole thing stays on Indian soil this year. It doesn't, not this time.
Categories run wide: Bots Combat, Robo Race, Robo Soccer, Maze Solver, Drone Racing, RC Plane Racing, Water Rocket, and an Innovation Contest, with a Junior category for younger builders. Zonal registration runs about ₹1,200 plus GST per challenge, national round about ₹2,000 plus GST per challenge. Top finishers get partial travel and accommodation sponsorship toward the international round.
The homegrown option most students never hear about: Indian Rover Challenge
One more option, if Mars rovers interest you more than line followers: the Indian Rover Challenge (IRC) and Indian Rover Design Challenge (IRDC), organized by Mars Society South Asia. The inaugural edition drew more than 10 teams from India and Bangladesh. It's a genuinely different build from anything else on this list: full-scale rovers built to navigate simulated Martian terrain, not sensors following a black line.
It's also the local feeder into a much bigger international story. Indian college teams, including Team Anveshak from IIT Madras, the IITB Mars Rover Team, Mars Rover Manipal, Team Deimos from IIT Mandi, Team RUDRA from SRM, Team Astra Robotics from RV College of Engineering, and Team Inferno from Delhi Technological University, already compete directly at the University Rover Challenge in Utah and the European Rover Challenge in Poland. So which one should you actually start with?
Here's the common belief: start with the hardest, most prestigious competition you can, because that's what looks best on a resume. Here's the reality: the students who stay in robotics long-term are almost always the ones who started with the shortest feedback loop, not the biggest name.
A short feedback loop looks like this. You build something. You test it within weeks, not months. It fails in a specific, fixable way. You fix it. You test again. WRO India and e-Yantra are both built around this loop on purpose. Techfest and DD Robocon are built around a much longer one (months of work before you find out if your approach was even right), which is exactly why they suit people who've already been through a few short loops and know roughly what they're doing.
If you're genuinely unsure, the honest order is this: your college's own tech-fest event, or e-Yantra, first. A bigger fest's line-follower or robotics event next. Techfest or DD Robocon-level competitions once you've got a working robot behind you and a real sense of your own build time.
What you actually need to build your first competition robot
If your first competition is a line-follower or navigation event, which covers most of the school and college-level table above, you don't need to design hardware from scratch. Here's how the gear maps to where you're starting from.

Two honest notes on where this hardware doesn't apply. Robowars is a combat platform (armor, weapons, drivetrain torque). DD Robocon's task-based mechanical challenges and the Mars rover competitions above are custom-fabricated per year's theme. None of these map to a line-follower kit, so budget for them separately if that's your track.
