THE STORY

THE STORY

We engineered the ARC-16 for the edge cases, the line breaks, the acute angles, and the complex crossovers that trip up standard sensors. By doubling the resolution of the standard array and curving it up, we’ve given makers the ability to write smarter, case-driven logic that anticipates the track before the wheels even react.

SOFTWARE AND PROCESSING

◘ The ARC-16 is a 16-channel IR sensor array designed to provide 2 Dimensional surface detection. It consists of sixteen infrared transmitter-receiver pairs arranged to capture both horizontal and vertical contrast variations. The sensor uses a multiplexer (MUX) based architecture to route multiple analog signals through a limited number of microcontroller Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) pins, optimizing hardware resource usage while maintaining high sensing resolution.

◘ During operation, the microcontroller controls the MUX selection lines to sequentially scan all 16 sensor channels. This time-multiplexed sampling process enables efficient acquisition of multi-channel data using a single or limited ADC inputs.

◘ Because of its 2D sensing capability, the ARC-16 can detect and differentiate complex line configurations such as acute angles, 90° turns, circular loops, intersections (T and + junctions), line breaks, asymmetric paths and even track inversions at different angles. These configurations can be reliably interpreted and resolved through appropriate software logic and pattern recognition code.

Fast SuARC16 – 16-Channel 2D IR Sensor Array for Advanced Line Followers & Maze Solversction line follower robot kit for Students, Builders & College Students

The TechGeeks ARC16 is a 16-channel analog reflectance IR sensor array engineered for elite competition robotics, maze solver robots, and autonomous mobile robot navigation systems. Built with a 16x4 multiplexer architecture, it scans 16 independent IR transmitter-receiver pairs through limited ADC pins — delivering high-resolution, noise-free analog output at 10KHz sampling across its full 2D sensing field. Weighing just 8 grams at 5V input and ~310mA current draw, the ARC16 is designed to sit at the front of high-speed competition robots without compromising the weight budget. Available in four LED indicator color options. The ARC16's 2D sensing capability enables line follower and maze solver firmware to distinguish between simple straight-line tracking and complex configurations like T-junctions, + intersections, acute-angle turns, 180° loops, and asymmetric branching paths. Through pattern recognition algorithms, the microcontroller can identify these configurations and execute programmed routing decisions — the foundation of intelligent autonomous navigation. Builders learn multiplexer-based signal scanning, ADC sampling control, two-dimensional signal processing, and real-time sensor fusion techniques applicable to industrial robotics. If you're building a competitive maze solver or an advanced AGV in India and need a sensor that handles complex track geometries reliably, the ARC16 is the highest-resolution IR sensor array available at its price point in India. It ships across India with free delivery above ₹1999, and is used by robotics teams targeting events at Techfest IIT Bombay, Robocon India, NIT Trichy Pragyan, VIT Gravitas, and other college competitions that include maze-solving and multi-path autonomous robot challenges.

Using a 16x4 MUX (multiplexer) architecture, it delivers 16 independent IR sensing channels through a compact PCB while using minimal ADC pins on your microcontroller — making it both hardware-efficient and data-rich. Its 2D sensing configuration allows it to detect complex line geometries: T-junctions, + intersections, acute-angle turns, loops, line breaks, and asymmetric paths that defeat standard 8-channel sensors. Who Is It For: Advanced robotics students, competition team leads building maze solvers, and engineers designing AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) or AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot) navigation systems. Not required for basic line following — use the ARC8 for that. The ARC16 shines when the track gets complicated. Why ARC16: Competitions like Techfest Maze Solving, Robocon, and e-Yantra feature multi-path environments that require junction-aware logic. A standard 8-channel sensor gives you line position; the ARC16 gives you line geometry — enabling smarter path-planning algorithms, intersection handling, and loop detection through firmware logic rather than mechanical guesswork.
