ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS

Part 1 of this guide covered everything that happens inside India: Techfest, DD Robocon, e-Yantra, and the rest. This one covers the other side of that ecosystem, the competitions that mostly happen outside India, but that Indian teams already fly out and compete in.
That last part surprises people. FRC counts India among roughly 30 participating countries. A team from Bannari Amman Institute of Technology has competed in RobotX's simulation track. Six Indian teams made it to the VEX World Championship this year. This isn't a closed club reserved for a handful of famous institutes. It's a series of ladders, and this guide shows you where each one starts, what it actually costs, and whether an Indian student can realistically climb it.

The two giants: FRC and VEX
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)
FIRST Robotics Competition is the most established of the big global high-school leagues, running since 1992. Teams get a build season to design, program, and construct an industrial-size robot (think dishwasher-sized, not desktop-sized) around a brand-new game revealed every January at Kickoff. The 2026 season involves more than 3,700 teams across roughly 30 countries, and India is one of them, even if the numbers are still small compared to the US teams that dominate the program.
FIRST's core values, gracious professionalism and coopertition (the idea that teams help competitors even while competing against them), aren't just branding. They genuinely shape how regionals run. Around 600 teams qualify each year for the FIRST Championship, the closest thing this sport has to a World Cup.

VEX Robotics (V5 and IQ)
VEX Robotics holds the Guinness World Record for the largest robotics competition on the planet, and the numbers back it up: more than 11,000 teams in the high-school V5 league alone, across more than 50 countries. It splits into VEX IQ (elementary and middle school) and VEX V5 (middle and high school, the flagship), with a university-level VEX U tier above both.
India's pathway here has gone from nothing to genuinely functional in a short time. Local partners now run a complete national season, and a recent cycle saw more than 50 teams compete in their first-ever events, more than 40 advance to the National Championship, and six Indian teams qualify for the VEX Robotics World Championship at the America's Center in St. Louis, competing across two full weeks of divisions against some of the world's most established STEM programs.

RoboCup: the research-grade tier
RoboCup sits in a different category from FRC and VEX. Founded in 1997, its stated mission is genuinely audacious: build a team of autonomous humanoid robots that can beat the human World Cup champions by 2050. That single sentence tells you who this competition is actually for. University research labs, not first-time student builders.
The competition runs across several leagues: Soccer (which just merged its old Humanoid League and Standard Platform League into a single Humanoid Soccer League, alongside Small Size and Middle Size leagues), Rescue, RoboCup@Home, and an Industrial track that's folding into a new Smart Manufacturing League. RoboCup 2026 runs in Incheon, South Korea, the first time the event has ever been hosted there, with organizers expecting more than 3,000 participants.
There's a real India connection here, just not at the main event yet. RoboCup Singapore Open, one of the Asia-Pacific region's biggest regional qualifiers, explicitly draws participants from India alongside Australia, China, Japan, and several other countries. If RoboCup interests you, that regional circuit, or RoboCupJunior (the school-age on-ramp, covering Soccer, Rescue, and OnStage categories), is the realistic entry point, not the main international event.

Underwater and surface robotics
Marine robotics has its own competition ecosystem, and Indian teams are already active in parts of it.
MATE ROV is the more education-focused of the two main tracks. Students design remotely operated vehicles for tasks modeled on real ocean-industry problems, competing across SCOUT, NAVIGATOR, and RANGER divisions from high school through post-secondary level. The 2026 World Championship, its 24th year, runs June 25 to 27 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, drawing the top 86 teams from 16 countries. There's no confirmed India-based regional yet, so an interested Indian team would need to connect directly with MATE or find a regional event willing to host a remote entry.
RoboNation runs the more advanced trio: RoboSub (autonomous underwater vehicles), RoboBoat (autonomous surface vehicles), and RobotX (the flagship, where teams build a surface vehicle and an aerial vehicle that work together). Indian teams already show up here. RoboSub 2025, held in Irvine, California, drew a record 58 teams from nine countries, India among them. Bannari Amman Institute of Technology fielded Team ABYSS in RobotX's Virtual RobotX simulation track, going up against university teams from Indonesia, Australia, Turkey, and the US.

Aerial robotics: the International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC)
The International Aerial Robotics Competition is the oldest aerial robotics competition in the world, running since 1991 out of Georgia Tech and now hosted by RoboNation. It's not really a spectator event. Organizers call it a technology sport on purpose, since each mission is designed to be borderline impossible at the time it's proposed, and some missions have taken teams the better part of a decade to finally solve.
The current stage, Mission 10, asks teams to build a fully autonomous drone that can guide a person at risk across a football-field-sized hazardous area in under ten minutes, without GPS. The 2026 event runs August 12 to 13 in Huntsville, Alabama, with a $20,000 grand prize for whichever team finally cracks it. This is grad-student and advanced-undergrad territory, not a starting point, but past missions have run at Asia-Pacific venues too, so it isn't purely a US-only affair.

Europe's amateur circuit: Eurobot
Eurobot has been running in France for 27 years, organized by Planète Sciences, and it's built around a simpler premise than most competitions on this list: two autonomous robots, one small playing field (about 3 by 2 meters), a match lasting well under two minutes, and a new theme every year. The 2026 theme is Winter Is Coming. A companion event, Eurobot Junior, uses remote-controlled robots instead of autonomous ones, for younger teams.
The organizers are explicit that Eurobot is open to young people worldwide, gathered in a club, a group of friends, or a school. In practice, entry usually runs through a national qualifying round, and most of those national rounds are European. There's no established India qualifying round as of this writing, so an interested Indian team's realistic path is contacting Planète Sciences directly about an open or international entry route, rather than expecting a ready-made national feeder the way WRO India or VEX India now offer.

Educational robotics: Botball
Botball, run by the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics, targets middle and high schoolers and is built around a short build period following educator workshops each year. The current season's theme, Stack Attack, has teams building two autonomous robots that manage a simulated warehouse crisis: sorting crates, restoring a broken supply chain, getting deliveries moving again.
It's a well-established US program with an international community around it. Worth knowing about as a model for tightly timeboxed competition design, more than as something most Indian students will enter directly, since there's no confirmed India chapter yet.
Mars rovers: where Indian teams are already winning
Mars rover competitions are a different kind of internationalism. This is one where Indian college teams aren't just eligible. They're already regulars, and some of them are among the more decorated teams in the field.
The University Rover Challenge (URC), run by the Mars Society since 2006, happens every summer at the Mars Desert Research Station outside Hanksville, Utah, a site chosen because its geology genuinely resembles the Martian surface. It's since grown into a whole family of related events: the European Rover Challenge in Poland, the Canadian International Rover Challenge, the Anatolian Rover Challenge in Turkey, the Australian Rover Challenge, and India's own Indian Rover Challenge, covered in Part 1 of this guide.
Indian teams already compete directly in the flagship US and European events, not just the homegrown one. Team Anveshak from IIT Madras, the IITB Mars Rover Team, Mars Rover Manipal, Team Deimos from IIT Mandi, Team RUDRA from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Team Astra Robotics from RV College of Engineering, and Team Inferno from Delhi Technological University have all fielded rovers at URC or the European Rover Challenge. Mars Rover Manipal has won the John Barainca Award, given to the competition's best science team, more than once, and has placed in the top 10 on several occasions.
None of this is cheap. Budget documentation from past Indian teams has put a rover's bill of materials alone at roughly $22,000, about ₹18 lakh, with another ₹7 lakh or so for base station and command equipment. This is one of the most resource-intensive competitions on this entire list, run almost entirely by dedicated interdisciplinary college clubs, not something you join in your first semester.

The research frontier: DARPA, NASA, and IEEE ICRA
A few names in this space aren't really competitions you can enter today. They're worth knowing about anyway, because they show where the ceiling actually is.
The DARPA Robotics Challenge ran from 2012 to 2015, funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and asked teams to build robots capable of operating in disaster environments: opening doors, climbing ladders, operating equipment built for humans. It has concluded. There's no current edition to enter. But it produced a lot of the humanoid-robotics research companies are still building on today, and it's a useful case study in how one well-designed competition can move an entire field forward.
NASA's Sample Return Robot Challenge ran a similar arc as part of NASA's Centennial Challenges program, pushing autonomous navigation and object retrieval across more than 40 teams over several years before NASA held its final edition. Also concluded. Also worth knowing as a case study rather than a target.
IEEE ICRA competitions are very much active, but they sit at the opposite end of the accessibility spectrum from everything else in this guide. Held alongside the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2026 runs in Vienna, Austria, this June), these include events like the Robotic Grasping and Manipulation Competition, humanoid whole-body control challenges, and autonomous racing, entered mostly by PhD labs and industry research teams rather than students building their first robot. If you end up here one day, it means you've already climbed every other rung on this list.
So can an Indian student actually get into any of this?
Here's a belief that trips up a lot of ambitious students: that these international competitions are closed to Indian teams unless you're from a handful of elite institutes with unlimited budgets. Here's what's actually true. Indian teams already compete, and place, at RoboSub, RobotX, the University Rover Challenge, VEX Worlds, and FRC. Most of them aren't IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi. Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, RV College of Engineering, SRM, and Delhi Technological University all show up in this guide.
What actually separates the teams that get there from the teams that don't isn't the college name. It's sequencing. Every Indian team mentioned here built up through something smaller first: a campus fest, an e-Yantra season, a line follower, a VEX or FTC season, before they had the budget, the club structure, and the technical base to take on a ₹18 lakh rover build or a RobotX simulation entry. Part 1 of this guide is genuinely the first step toward Part 2, not a separate track.
Conclusion
FRC, VEX, RoboCup, MATE ROV, IARC, Eurobot, the Mars rover circuit: none of these are as far away from an Indian student's first line follower as they look from here. Every Indian team named in this guide started smaller and closer to home, then worked outward. That's really the whole strategy, and it's the same one Part 1 laid out.
